⚡ Quick Vibes
  • ChatGPT’s new Agent Mode can browse websites, interact with buttons, and complete real tasks using a virtual computer.
  • It worked well with Asos.com, successfully finding clothes by size, but struggled with websites that block bots.
  • While still limited in some regions and use cases, Agent Mode is a powerful step forward for AI assistants.

ChatGPT Agent Mode: Can It Actually Do Your Work for You?

OpenAI just dropped something big: Agent Mode inside ChatGPT. People are already calling it one of the most advanced AI upgrades of 2025, and for good reason. Agent Mode gives ChatGPT the ability to go beyond just generating text. It can now browse websites, click buttons, filter search results, and even complete entire tasks from start to finish using its own virtual computer.

It’s basically like giving ChatGPT its own laptop and asking it to go do your homework, book a flight, or shop for clothes...all without lifting a finger.

So how does it actually work? And more importantly, does it work at all?

Let’s dive into what this new feature is, what it’s capable of, and what happens when you put it to the test.

What is ChatGPT Agent Mode?

Agent Mode is OpenAI’s newest feature that lets ChatGPT complete tasks using a virtual computer inside a secure environment. It can:

  • Access the internet with two types of browsers: one for reading text and one for interacting with visual elements
  • Click on buttons, search websites, and fill out forms
  • Create documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and even generate code
  • Use “Connectors” to link with third-party apps like Google Drive, Gmail, and GitHub

Agent Mode pulls together all of OpenAI’s tools into one experience, rather than keeping them as separate functions. This makes ChatGPT feel less like a chatbot and more like a virtual assistant that can handle actual workflows.

How to Use Agent Mode

If you're a Plus or Pro user, enabling Agent Mode is simple. Just click the "Tools" button in the ChatGPT interface and choose “Agent Mode.” Once it’s active, you can type in a task like you normally would.

In the demo we’re reviewing, the task was:
"Find me a pair of black jeans and a cool top for a casual outfit on Levi.com. I'm size W32 L32 in jeans and medium in t-shirts."

Simple enough, right?

Putting It to the Test: Shopping With Agent Mode

Here’s what happened. Agent Mode launched its virtual computer, opened the Levi’s website, and hit a wall.

Turns out, Levi.com blocked the agent from accessing their site. This is one of the major limitations of Agent Mode right now. Some websites are built to prevent automation tools from interacting with them. So if a brand blocks automated access, the agent can't do anything.

But all hope wasn’t lost.

The task was switched to Asos.com instead. And this time, Agent Mode got to work:

  • Opened the website
  • Filtered jeans by size and brand
  • Looked for black Levi’s in W32 L32
  • Searched for matching t-shirts in size medium
  • Cross-checked product availability
  • Returned results in a clean table format

That’s right. ChatGPT was doing actual shopping in real-time, inside a browser window, based on your style and size.

Adjusting on the Fly

Here’s where Agent Mode gets even more impressive. You can interrupt the agent mid-task to update your request.

In the demo, we changed the ask to longer legs: “Actually, my size is W32 L34.”

The agent paused, recalculated the search, and continued the task using the updated information.

It didn’t restart the task. It adjusted and kept going, just like a real assistant would.

Limitations and Regional Issues

Even though Agent Mode is powerful, it has its limits.

  1. Website restrictions: As seen with Levi.com, some websites block bots or virtual agents.
  2. Cart issues: In this case, ChatGPT found the clothes, but couldn’t add them to the shopping cart...likely due to backend security or regional website differences.
  3. Location-based access: In regions like the UK, access to some tools (like third-party app connectors or custom integrations) is restricted. This could be due to privacy laws like GDPR.

So, while Agent Mode works well in supported regions, features may vary depending on where you are.

Connector Tools: A Game Changer

Another key upgrade is Connectors. These let Agent Mode link to services like Gmail, Google Drive, or GitHub to perform tasks like:

  • Summarizing your emails
  • Editing or organizing documents
  • Reviewing code repositories

If you live in the US or other supported regions, these features are already rolling out. For users elsewhere, they may arrive a bit later.

What ChatGPT Delivered

After the Asos shopping task finished, Agent Mode returned a clean breakdown:

  • A pair of Levi’s black jeans in the correct size
  • A matching casual t-shirt in size medium
  • A table showing item names, prices, and product descriptions
  • Working links to open each product page in your own browser

While it couldn’t add items to the cart due to site restrictions, it successfully completed the search and narrowed down options like a real online shopping assistant.

Is Agent Mode Worth It?

Agent Mode isn’t perfect, but it’s definitely promising. It’s still early days, and there are limitations with certain sites and regional tools. But for a first-generation tool that combines browsing, automation, and AI-generated content, it’s impressive.

What works well:

  • It can think through multi-step tasks
  • It adjusts to new instructions on the fly
  • It handles real-time browsing and filtering
  • It combines tools like code writing, image generation, and document building in one place

What needs improvement:

  • Some websites block it
  • Can't always add items to a cart or make transactions
  • Feature access depends on your location
  • Only available to paid users for now

Despite those challenges, Agent Mode feels like a huge leap forward in AI usability. It’s not just chat anymore. It’s do.
